Writing within limits

  • Put the most important words first: feeds and search results cut text off from the end.
  • On LinkedIn, only the first two or three lines show before "see more".
  • For SMS, avoid emoji in long messages: one emoji drops the limit from 160 to 70 characters per message.

Frequently asked questions

Does this count spaces?

Yes. "Characters" includes spaces and line breaks, which is how most platforms count. "Without spaces" is shown separately.

How are emoji counted?

Each emoji is counted as one character here. Some platforms count certain emoji as two, and an SMS containing any emoji drops to 70 characters per message.

Are the SEO limits exact?

No. Google truncates titles and descriptions by pixel width, not a fixed character count. Around 60 characters for titles and 155 for descriptions is a practical guide.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser.
